Race 5 – Magnetic Loop 2020

The Magnetic Loop Stage Race is back to get your adrenalin flowing. Such a great race wit awesome scenery it is destined to become not just a favourite but a classic event.

The 5 stage race will run with 2 groups of paddlers, those that are faster and those that are more social. The idea of this is to allow fast transitions after each stage and to implement the best water safety methods possible to all competitors. In order to race in the Around Magnetic Island Loop, competitors must prove themselves at a long course prior to the event or mention other courses/paddles you have done in the past.

 

LONG COURSE – 37.9km (or up to 2km less if you take a narrow line against island)


Briefing time – 8:25am
Start Location – Nelly Bay Marina
Start Time – 8:45am
Finish location – Nelly Bay Marina (paddling past Peppers Deck)

Presentations -3:45pm Scallywags Cafe (just over the road from HQ)

Short Course – approx 10km ( likely Picnic Bay to West Pt or West pt to HSB based on conditions)
Short Course Briefing time – 8:25am (with long course briefing)
Short Course Start time – Approx 9:05am or when the long course reach horseshoe bay/west pt leg if wind permits

Start location: Hoseshoe Bay
Finish location: West Point

Race Stages (direction will be determined at a later date and is dependent on wind/tide conditions)

Stage – 4.46 km NELLY BAY to PICNIC BAY

Stage – 9.26 km PICNIC BAY to WEST POINT

Stage -10.9 km WEST POINT to HORSESHOE BAY

Stage – 9.78 km HORSESHOE BAY to ALMA BAY

LOGISTICS

Transport for teams is provided to swap over locations. This transport must be booked prior to the race to ensure adequate transport is available.

Transport is provided for short course competitors and their craft to the start line from Nelly Bay and from the finish back to Nelly Bay. This transport must be booked prior to the race.

Want a few creature comforts at each stage – We will transport 1 bag per competitor to each stage finish so you can have all the comforts you need while you’re there. Make sure your bag is clearly labelled with your name so we can make sure it makes it in the correct location when you want it!

We also provide massage, food, drink, groovy music at each staging area (within COVID safe guidelines). It might be a ‘race’ but really everyone just wants to have a great day!!!!

GETTING YOUR CRAFT TO MAGNETIC ISLAND

Message from Magnetic Island Ferries:

Regarding any vehicle bookings that event persons may want to book, please ensure they book as a 6m car if they are traveling with kayaks, this will reduce any issues on the day of travel and ensure smooth loading of vessel. And once again, 10% discount will be offered to participants; must book through the office 07 4796 9300.
Walk on passengers carrying Kayaks will be offered the discount once again of 25% with travel of Kayaks.
To avoid any last minute booking disappointments, please ensure all participants wanting these discounts phone the office by COB (4:30pm) Thursday 17th September, and please ensure they mention they will be traveling with a kayak for the Paddle race. ? Ph: 07 4796 9300.
You will need to book onto the 7:10am barge, you will arrive about 15min before briefing.

LONG COURSE

Long Course: $89
Tag Team of 2 individuals: $150 ($75 each)
Team of 2 in a double boat doing the whole trip: $120 ($60 each)

Tag Team of 2 in double boat: $200 ($50 each)
Tag Team of 5 (providing own transport around the island): $175 ($35 each)

 

SHORT COURSE

Short Course: $50

Short Course Double/OC2: $70
